There is no single French Way airport. The right flight is the one that connects cleanly with your actual starting town and arrival time.

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

Biarritz is the nearest practical airport for many international travelers. Bayonne is the rail gateway, with regional trains to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. Bilbao, San Sebastián and Pau can also work, but usually require more changes or a private transfer. Late arrivals often need a night before continuing.

Pamplona, Logroño and Burgos

Pamplona has a small airport and useful rail and coach connections from Madrid, Barcelona and Zaragoza. Bilbao is another common gateway. Logroño has limited air service, so travelers often arrive through Bilbao or Madrid and continue by bus, train or private transfer. Burgos is best approached by train or coach from Madrid rather than by relying on its local airport.

León, Astorga and Ponferrada

Madrid provides the broadest range of international flights and fast rail links to León. From León, rail, coach or a prearranged vehicle can reach Astorga and Ponferrada. Check the final connection before buying the flight; an inexpensive late arrival can create an expensive overnight stop.

Sarria

Santiago is often the simplest airport for Sarria, followed by a direct private transfer or a connection through Lugo. Madrid also works by train, including services to Sarria on selected timetables. Our detailed guide to reaching Sarria compares the usual options.

Leaving Santiago

Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport is linked to the city by the 6A bus. Some regional coaches also connect the airport with Camino towns, but schedules change. Porto, A Coruña and Vigo can be useful departure airports when fares or onward flights are better.

Do not book a flight that depends on finishing a walking stage and reaching the airport the same day. We recommend a final night in Santiago. It protects the flight and gives you time to collect the Compostela, visit the cathedral and enjoy the city after the walk.
