Way to Finisterre ClassicSelf-Guided from Santiago

This journey begins where your previous Camino ended. Make your way back to Santiago de Compostela and settle into your accommodation in the Old Town, surrounded once again by the familiar energy of pilgrims arriving in Praza do Obradoiro. Your Ultreya Pilgrim Kit will be waiting for you, ready for the road ahead. Unlike the routes that lead toward the Cathedral, the Camino to Finisterre begins here and follows the setting sun west to the Atlantic. It offers experienced pilgrims a chance to return, walk beyond Santiago and discover what lies after the traditional finish.

Leave Praza do Obradoiro and follow the Camino west through Rúa das Hortas and San Lourenzo. The city soon gives way to quiet lanes, eucalyptus and pine forests, small villages and rolling green countryside. One of today’s highlights is Ponte Maceira, where a graceful medieval bridge crosses the River Tambre beside old watermills. Continue through Barca and over the climb to Trasmonte before descending into Negreira.

Leave Negreira with an immediate climb, then settle into a quieter rhythm through Zas, Rapote and Pontecamiño. Pine and oak forests alternate with small farming villages as the route crosses the rural landscapes of Mazaricos, far removed from the busier final stages into Santiago. The path rises and falls throughout the day, with broad views from the exposed granite hills and peaceful valleys below. Continue beyond Santa Mariña and Maroñas toward A Picota, where a welcoming boutique hotel offers a comfortable end to this long but deeply rewarding stage.

Today the Camino feels increasingly remote as it crosses the high moors toward the Atlantic. Near Hospital, the routes to Muxía and Finisterre divide; follow the Finisterre way through open countryside, wind-shaped hills and wide horizons that make this one of the journey’s most atmospheric stages. From Alto do Cruzeiro da Armada, the sea finally appears in the distance. Descend toward the coast and the harbor town of Cee, gateway to the Costa da Morte. Its sheltered bay, seafaring character and first close views of the Atlantic mark a striking change after days in Galicia’s green interior.

Follow the coast from Cee through Corcubión, whose stone houses and arcaded streets overlook the estuary. The Camino climbs through wooded slopes before the Atlantic opens ahead and the long sweep of Langosteira Beach leads you into Finisterre. Continue to the lighthouse at Cape Finisterre and Kilometer 0, where the Camino meets the ocean beneath the cliffs, then return to town for the night and celebrate the end of your journey.

After breakfast, your journey comes to an end in Finisterre. Take one last look across the Atlantic before continuing with your onward travel, or return to Santiago de Compostela by arranged transfer or public transportation. You may wish to spend an additional night by the sea, revisit Santiago with a different perspective or continue exploring Galicia. Having walked beyond the familiar finish in Praza do Obradoiro to the western edge of the land, you leave with a quieter and more personal conclusion to your Camino.
