Camino At Your PacePortuguese Spiritual Way from Vigo

Make your way to Vigo by flying into Vigo Airport or traveling by bus or train from Oporto. Settle into your 4 star hotel and take time to discover Galicia’s largest city, set on the shores of one of the beautiful Rías Baixas. Explore the historic quarter, walk along the marina or visit the lively oyster stalls of Rúa da Pescadería. Vigo is one of Europe’s most important fishing ports, yet its waterfront setting, distant islands and surrounding hills give the city a distinctly maritime character.

Your pilgrimage begins in Vigo before gradually leaving the city behind and climbing above the estuary. The landscape soon opens to reveal beautiful views over the Ría de Vigo, the Cíes Islands, the Morrazo Peninsula and the great Rande Bridge. Continue along quiet lanes and woodland tracks to Chapela. This gentle first stage offers time to settle into the rhythm of the Camino without rushing. At the end of your walk, an arranged transfer will return you to Vigo for a second night at your hotel.

After breakfast, an arranged transfer returns you to Chapela. Follow peaceful lanes and forest paths toward Redondela, where the Coastal and Central Portuguese Ways meet. Two monumental 19th-century railway bridges rise above its streets, earning it the name Town of Viaducts. Take time to explore the old center and waterfront before transferring to a charming wine-country property around 20 minutes away. Surrounded by vineyards and gardens, this historic winery offers a peaceful setting for the next two nights and a wine tasting may be arranged at the property.

Return to Redondela and begin with a steady climb through woodland and traditional villages. As the route rises, enjoy beautiful views across the Ría de Vigo before descending toward Arcade, a small coastal town celebrated for its oysters. Your stage ends near the historic bridge of Ponte Sampaio, where local forces defeated Napoleon’s troops during the Spanish War of Independence. An arranged transfer will return you to your wine-country hotel for a second peaceful evening among the vineyards.

Begin by crossing the historic bridge of Ponte Sampaio before climbing through a traditional stone village. The route then enters a peaceful oak forest, followed by a gradual descent toward Pontevedra. A beautiful riverside alternative leads into the city’s remarkably preserved pedestrian center, filled with arcaded squares and historic churches. Discover the scallop-shaped Church of the Pilgrim Virgin before settling into the 4-star Parador de Pontevedra, a distinguished 16th-century palace in the heart of the Old Town.

Leave Pontevedra and join the Spiritual Variant, inspired by the legendary final journey of Saint James. The Camino passes the historic Monastery of San Xoán de Poio before descending toward the coast and the fishing village of Combarro. Take time to explore its granite lanes, waterfront crosses and remarkable collection of traditional hórreos overlooking the sea. Your walk ends here, avoiding the long and demanding climb toward Armenteira. An arranged transfer will take you onward to an elegant Galician manor house nearby.

After a short transfer to Armenteira, visit its peaceful 12th-century Cistercian monastery before joining the Route of Stone and Water, one of the most beautiful paths on the Portuguese Way. Follow the river through dense woodland, passing waterfalls and more than 30 historic watermills once used to grind grain. The stage ends near Barrantes, where an arranged transfer takes you into the heart of historic Cambados. Spend the evening among elegant stone squares and manor houses in the celebrated capital of Albariño wine.

We start the day with a 1h catamaran cruise on the Ulla River following the journey of the legendary stone boat that carried the remains of Saint James. You will pass the remains of the Towers of Catoira, which used to protect Santiago from the attacks of the Vikings, before reaching the outskirts of Padrón, famous for its "Pimientos", small mild green peppers served fried and salted. Then walk 4 km to Iria Flavia to spend the night a beautiful guesthouse just off the Camino.

Leave Iria Flavia and follow the Camino through peaceful villages and wooded countryside. Along the way, pass the imposing Baroque sanctuary of A Escravitude, whose twin towers rise unexpectedly above this rural section of the route. Continue toward Parada de Francos, where a guided visit to the historic Pazo do Faramello is planned, subject to availability. Discover its gardens, architecture and connection to Galician history before continuing to an intimate country guesthouse nearby for the night.

Continue north from Parada de Francos through quiet hamlets, woodland and gently rolling countryside. This short stage allows you to enjoy the final rural landscapes of the Camino before reaching the outskirts of Santiago. End in Milladoiro, where the first glimpses toward the city signal that your journey is nearing its conclusion. An arranged transfer will return you to your country guesthouse for a second night, leaving only a final 7 km walk into Santiago the following morning.

Return to Milladoiro for the final stage of your pilgrimage. Follow the more attractive riverside approach toward Santiago, passing woodland and the remains of the medieval fortress of A Rocha Vella before joining the Sarela River. Enter the historic center and follow the Camino to Praza do Obradoiro for an unforgettable arrival beneath the Cathedral façade. After celebrating the completion of your journey, settle into an exceptional 4-star hotel housed in a beautifully restored historic building near the Old Town. You may then collect your Compostela, attend Pilgrim Mass and explore Santiago at your own pace.

Your Camino journey ends after breakfast. You may choose to extend your stay in Santiago, spend more time exploring the Cathedral and old town, enjoy a guided visit, or continue onward to Finisterre and the Atlantic coast.
