The French Way

The French Way is the great unfolding Camino journey: a succession of landscapes, historic cities and encounters that changes character as you travel west. From Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, the complete Way crosses the Pyrenees before passing through vineyard country, the wide horizons of the Meseta, mountain landscapes and the green lanes of Galicia. By the time Santiago appears, the arrival carries the weight of everything experienced along the road.
It is also the Camino many travelers first meet through culture: the route followed in Emilio Estevez’s film The Way, Paulo Coelho’s book The Pilgrimage and the documentary Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago. Their stories have helped generations imagine the friendships, difficulties and personal discoveries that can emerge over weeks on the road.
You do not need to walk all of it to feel its spirit. The final stages from Sarria bring together oak woods, old stone lanes, rural villages and the shared anticipation of pilgrims approaching Santiago. Longer journeys reveal how rewarding the contrasts can be, while the route can also be experienced by e-bike or through a private guided or coach-supported journey for a group.
