Itinerary

Portuguese Way by Bike Classic Day by Day

250 kilometers from Oporto to Santiago de Compostela.

Day 1Make your way to Oporto
Make your way to Oporto.

Your journey begins in Oporto, one of Europe’s most atmospheric cities. Settle into your hotel before exploring the historic centre, from the tiled halls of São Bento Station and lively Rua das Flores to the colourful houses lining the Ribeira.

Cross the Dom Luís I Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia, where Port wine has matured in riverside cellars for centuries. Your e-bike will be professionally fitted and adjusted before the journey begins, ready for tomorrow’s first stage towards Santiago.

Day 2Cycle 35 km from Oporto to Vila do Conde
Cycle 35 km from Oporto to Vila do Conde.

Begin your Camino beside the River Douro, following the waterfront towards Foz and the Atlantic Ocean. Continue north along the Portuguese Coastal Way, cycling through seaside communities and across a changing landscape of beaches, wooden boardwalks and quiet coastal roads.

Your destination is Vila do Conde, an historic town at the mouth of the River Ave. Its maritime heritage can be seen in the old shipyards, the replica Portuguese carrack moored beside the river and the elegant streets surrounding its medieval centre.

Day 3Cycle 30 km from Vila do Conde to Barcelos
Cycle 30 km from Vila do Conde to Barcelos.

Leave the coast behind and turn inland towards the traditional Portuguese Way. The route passes through São Pedro de Rates, whose Romanesque church has welcomed pilgrims traveling towards Santiago since the Middle Ages, before continuing along quiet lanes through eucalyptus woods, farmland and small villages. Arrive in Barcelos, a colorful riverside town famous for its pottery and the legendary Barcelos Cockerel, now one of Portugal’s most recognizable symbols. If you are here on Thursday morning, explore its celebrated weekly market, where local produce and crafts fill the Campo da República.

Day 4Cycle 34 km from Barcelos to Ponte de Lima
Cycle 34 km from Barcelos to Ponte de Lima.

Today’s stage is considered one of the most beautiful sections of the Portuguese Way. Leave Barcelos through vineyards and woodland, crossing the rolling valleys of the Cávado and Neiva rivers. Your e-bike will be particularly welcome on the climbs before the route descends towards the broad Lima Valley.

Cross the remarkable bridge into Ponte de Lima, founded in the 12th century and regarded as Portugal’s oldest town. Its Roman and medieval bridge once formed part of the ancient road linking Braga with Santiago and remains one of the most memorable landmarks on the Portuguese Camino.

Day 5Cycle 36 km from Ponte de Lima to Valença do Minho
Cycle 36 km from Ponte de Lima to Valença do Minho.

Leave Ponte de Lima across its historic bridge and ride into one of the wildest and most rewarding landscapes of the journey. The route climbs steadily through woodland and mountain scenery towards the Alto da Portela Grande de Labruja, the highest and most demanding point of your Camino. Some stretches beyond Codeçal are steep, rocky and difficult to cycle, even with an e-bike. You may need to dismount or follow the quieter road alternative around the roughest section. Continue through the peaceful Minho countryside to Valença, where you will spend the night within its magnificent fortified walls overlooking Spain.

Day 6Cycle 39 km from Valença do Minho to Soutoxuste
Cycle 39 km from Valença do Minho to Soutoxuste.

Cross the International Bridge over the River Miño and enter Galicia. Your first stop is Tui, whose hilltop cathedral has watched over the border for centuries. Continue towards O Porriño, choosing the attractive Camino Natural through woodland and beside the River Louro.

Beyond O Porriño, the route climbs gradually through the village of Mos before descending towards Redondela, where the inland and coastal Portuguese Ways meet. Continue a few kilometers beyond the town to your hotel near the coast at Soutoxuste.

Day 7Cycle 37 km from Soutoxuste to Caldas de Reis
Cycle 37 km from Soutoxuste to Caldas de Reis.

Ride towards Ponte Sampaio, where Galician forces defeated Napoleon’s army during the Peninsular War, before continuing through woodland and small villages to Pontevedra. Allow time for lunch and a visit to its beautifully preserved old quarter and the shell-shaped Church of the Pilgrim Virgin.

The route then follows quiet lanes and forest paths towards Caldas de Reis. Near Barro, make the short detour to the waterfalls and historic watermills of the Río Barosa before completing the final kilometers to this welcoming thermal town.

Day 8Cycle 39 km from Caldas de Reis to Santiago de Compostela
Cycle 39 km from Caldas de Reis to Santiago de Compostela.

Your final stage leads through woodland, farmland and traditional villages to Padrón, where legend says the stone boat carrying the remains of Saint James first reached Galicia. Continue past the sanctuary of A Escravitude and the slopes of Castro Lupario before beginning the final approach to Santiago. Follow the Camino into the historic center and ride into Plaza del Obradoiro, where the Cathedral finally appears before you. Stop for a while and breathe in this moment, do whatever feels right. After checking into your nearby hotel, present your stamped Pilgrim Passport at the Pilgrim’s Office, attend Pilgrim Mass and marvel at the architecture of our beloved City.

Day 9Start of your next adventure
Start of your next adventure.

Your Camino journey ends after breakfast. You may choose to extend your stay in Santiago, explore the Cathedral and old town in greater depth, join a guided visit or continue towards Finisterre and the Atlantic coast.

A wise pilgrim once told us: “The real Camino starts where the Camino de Santiago finishes, but I will not be afraid because the Camino will always be there for me.” We hope the Camino has brought you whatever you were looking for and wish to see you again soon!
