Massages on the Camino are normally arranged in advance and take place at your hotel after the day’s walk. Reception knows about the appointment and confirms where the treatment will be given. A mobile therapist arrives with a folding massage table, oils and clean covers. Most treatments take place in the guest’s room because many small Camino hotels do not have a dedicated massage room. Hotels with a spa or suitable treatment room will usually use that space instead.
Ultreya Tours has arranged this service for pilgrims for years. It is useful after several consecutive walking days, before a rest day, or when a traveler simply wants an evening devoted to recovery.
How to book it
Ask at least 48 hours in advance. Therapists cover a large rural area and need time to fit the appointment around travel between towns. A same-day request sometimes works in Santiago, Vigo, León or another city, but it becomes much harder in a village.
If you are traveling with Ultreya Tours, contact your Camino planner before departure or use the journey-assistance details in your travel documents once the trip has begun. You can also ask reception to arrange the appointment with a therapist known to the hotel. Tell them:
- the date and hotel;
- the preferred time;
- whether the appointment is for one person or more;
- whether you want a relaxing or sports-oriented massage;
- the length of the treatment;
- any mobility requirement that affects access to the room or treatment table.
The best appointment is usually at least an hour after you arrive. That leaves time to drink, shower and eat something light. Avoid booking so late that dinner becomes rushed. If the therapist is visiting two travelers, allow for consecutive appointments rather than assuming both treatments can happen together.
How much does a Camino massage cost?
A useful planning figure is about €60 for one hour. The exact price depends on the therapist, location, travel distance, treatment and hotel. Shorter sessions may be available. A hotel spa will normally use its own treatment menu and prices.
Unless your proposal expressly includes the service, you pay the therapist directly. Ask beforehand whether payment should be made in cash or by card. A mobile therapist may not carry a card terminal, particularly in a rural area.
The rate normally covers the therapist’s journey to the hotel and use of the portable table. Confirm this when making the appointment if the hotel is well away from a town or the main Camino.
What happens when the therapist arrives?
Reception will normally call your room or direct the therapist to the agreed treatment space. Clear enough floor area for the folding table and move luggage out of the way. The therapist will ask what you want from the session and whether there are painful areas, injuries, allergies, recent surgery or health conditions to consider.
The therapist will explain what clothing to remove and how the covers are used before the massage begins. Only the area being treated should be uncovered. Ask the therapist to stop or adjust the pressure, temperature or position whenever you feel uncomfortable.
Allow a few quiet minutes afterwards. Stand up slowly, drink according to thirst, and do not plan a hurried transfer or formal dinner five minutes after the appointment.
Which evening should you choose?
A massage does not need to be booked every day. Many pilgrims choose one of these moments:
- after the second or third substantial walking stage;
- on arrival at a hotel where the schedule is unhurried;
- before a rest day or shorter stage;
- in Santiago, when there is no long walk the following morning.
A very deep massage can leave muscles tender. If you have another demanding stage the next day, ask for moderate pressure and explain that you need to walk in the morning.
When massage is the wrong appointment
Massage can help with muscular tightness and general fatigue, but it is not a substitute for medical care. Sudden swelling, severe or increasing pain, an inability to bear weight, fever, numbness, chest pain, breathing difficulty or symptoms following a fall need medical assessment. In an emergency in Spain or Portugal, call 112.
Do not book over broken skin, an infected blister or an area with unexplained inflammation. Mention pregnancy, anticoagulant medication, circulatory problems and other relevant conditions before the appointment so the therapist can decide whether the treatment is appropriate.
