A Holy Year can be a wonderful time to walk the Camino. It brings more pilgrims to Santiago, a fuller programme of worship and the rare experience of entering through the Holy Door. It also concentrates demand on the final routes and on the best rooms.
The decision depends on what you want from the walk.
Choose 2027 for the collective experience
Walk in the Holy Year if the religious calendar matters to you, if you enjoy meeting pilgrims from many countries, or if arriving among parish and community groups sounds energising. Santiago feels particularly connected to the wider Catholic world during a jubilee.
You do not need to be Catholic to walk in 2027. The Camino remains open to travellers of every belief, and the historical and cultural interest of the Holy Year extends beyond its religious observance.
Choose the dates with care
The busiest pressure is likely around Easter, summer, weekends, 25 July, and major announced ceremonies. May, early June, late September and October can provide a better balance of walking weather and availability, although no month comes with guaranteed quiet or guaranteed sunshine.
Route choice matters too. The last stages of the French and Portuguese Ways bring many people into Santiago. The Winter Way and Sanabrés Way usually offer a different rhythm before they approach the city. If earning the Compostela is essential, the route must still satisfy the applicable distance and credential rules.
What if you dislike crowds?
You can still enjoy a Holy Year by avoiding the peak weeks, staying in smaller rural properties and giving Santiago an extra night. A personally adapted itinerary can divide crowded stages differently and avoid tying every important activity to the afternoon of arrival.
If you want deep quiet throughout the walk, an ordinary year may suit you better. The Holy Door and jubilee programme are distinctive, but they are not required for a meaningful Camino.
What needs booking first?
Start with the dates, room count and preferred standard of accommodation. Small historic hotels and country houses cannot add rooms when demand rises. Transport and luggage arrangements depend on the confirmed overnight sequence, so securing the itinerary creates the framework for everything else.
Do not book a journey around rumours of a papal visit. Pope Leo XIV has been invited, but no 2027 visit is confirmed at the time of publication.
Our conclusion is simple: walk in 2027 if the Holy Year itself appeals to you, then plan early enough to enjoy it properly. If your priority is solitude, choose the shoulder season, a quieter route or a different year.
