In 2027, Santiago will celebrate a Compostelan Holy Year because 25 July, the Feast of Saint James, falls on a Sunday. The city will still be recognisably Santiago, but the rhythm around the Cathedral will be different.

The Holy Door will be open

The first visible change begins before 2027. Santiago Cathedral has scheduled the solemn opening of the Holy Door for 5 pm on Thursday 31 December 2026, followed by Mass presided over by the Archbishop.

The door faces Praza da Quintana. It is opened for a Jacobean Holy Year and remains part of the Cathedral’s pilgrimage and liturgical life throughout the year. Passing through it can carry spiritual meaning for Catholic pilgrims. Walking through the door alone does not fulfil the conditions for receiving a plenary indulgence.

Santiago will receive more organised pilgrimages

Parishes, dioceses, confraternities, schools and associations plan journeys around a Holy Year. That brings larger groups to the Cathedral and Pilgrim’s Office, particularly around Easter, summer, weekends and major feast days.

Expect the streets between Porta do Camiño, Cervantes, Quintana and Obradoiro to feel especially alive. Cathedral access, security arrangements and Mass times can change around major ceremonies. A good itinerary leaves breathing room in Santiago rather than scheduling arrival, Compostela collection and onward transport too tightly.

25 July will be the focal date

The Feast of Saint James always brings a novena, first vespers and the traditional National Offering to the Apostle. In 2027 it also falls on a Sunday, the calendar event that creates the Holy Year. The Cathedral has not yet published every operational detail for July 2027, so exact times should be checked nearer departure.

Rooms and transport will be under greater pressure

Santiago has a large hotel supply, but the rooms most travellers ask us for are a smaller group: well-located boutique hotels, historic properties and rooms that can be confirmed together for a private party. Pressure also builds along the final stages because many pilgrimages converge there.

Early planning matters most when dates are fixed, the party needs several rooms, or the itinerary depends on a particular property. Read our specific guide to booking 2027 Camino accommodation.

The city and routes are being prepared

Galicia has announced a broad program of work toward 2027 across Camino routes and visitor infrastructure. Maintenance, access and visitor management will receive unusual attention before the Holy Year, with the exact effects varying by route and project.

What has not been confirmed

Pope Leo XIV has been invited to Santiago, but no Vatican programme confirming a 2027 visit has been announced as of 10 October 2026. Dates circulating without a Holy See programme should not shape travel plans. We are following the official sources in Will Pope Leo XIV Visit Santiago in 2027?.

The complete cultural and liturgical calendar will develop over time. We will update our advice when the Cathedral and public authorities publish confirmed arrangements.
