Galicia’s rías shelter mussels, oysters, clams and cockles, while its exposed rocks and Atlantic ports supply very different catches. The best seafood meal begins by asking what arrived and what it costs that day.

What is a mariscada?

A mariscada is a mixed seafood platter, often sold for two people. There is no compulsory list. A restaurant may combine velvet crab (nécoras), spider crab (centollo), prawns, langoustines, clams, razor clams, scallops and mussels. Lobster or bogavante usually raises the price substantially.

Ask whether the price is per person or per platter, whether the shellfish is local and which items are included. Seasonal closures and market conditions change the contents. In O Grove, where shellfish is central to the town’s identity, compare the platter with ordering two or three species separately; the latter is often more interesting if you care about provenance.

Percebes

Goose barnacles grow on wave-beaten rocks and are collected by percebeiros working in dangerous water. Their price reflects weather, access, season and size. They are boiled briefly in salted water and served in a pile. Bend the leathery tube away from yourself, shield it with your other hand and expect a jet of briny liquid.

Other names worth knowing include zamburiñas (small scallop relatives), berberechos (cockles), navajas (razor clams), cigalas (langoustines) and camarón (small local shrimp).

Michelin-listed places to consider

The Michelin Guide currently lists D’Berto, Teniente Domínguez 84 in O Grove, specifically for fish and seafood. It highlights the scale and quality of its estuary produce, grilled fish, spider crab and seasonal cockles.

In Santiago, Mar de Esteiro, Lugar Ponte Sionlla, is a Michelin-listed fish and seafood restaurant about six kilometres from the centre. Its lobster rice and seasonal fish stews are house specialities. Abastos 2.0 - Mesas, Rúa das Ameas 4 beside the market, builds a changing menu around the day’s fish and shellfish. Michelin status and opening arrangements can change, so confirm both the booking and current selection directly.

Our Portuguese Spiritual journeys cross the Ría de Arousa, where the mussel platforms are explained in How Galicia’s bateas work. We can also add an O Grove or Santiago seafood meal to a private itinerary through Start Planning.
