Head-torches moving through a village before dawn are a familiar Camino sight. The main reason is practical: many independent pilgrims use albergues without a reserved bed and want to reach the next town before the available places are taken. Leaving very early also became part of Camino culture, so walkers sometimes copy the habit without needing to.

Ultreya Tours travelers have confirmed accommodation, so there is no race for a bed at the end of the stage. Rooms are commonly ready around 3 pm, even when a walker reaches the hotel at midday.

Wait for breakfast and useful daylight

Hotel breakfasts usually begin at about 7:30 or 8 am, although the exact time belongs to the confirmed hotel. Leaving earlier may mean giving up the included breakfast unless a separate arrangement has been confirmed. Village cafés may still be closed, leaving no reliable food or restroom stop for the first part of the walk.

Daylight also changes quickly across the season. In Santiago de Compostela, sunrise is around 7:11 am in mid-May and 8:13 am in mid-September using 2026 local clock times as a comparison. Mountain valleys, woodland and heavy cloud can remain dim after the published sunrise. A departure after hotel breakfast provides much better visibility in both months.

When an earlier departure makes sense

An unusually early start can help on a very hot day, before a forecast afternoon storm or when a long stage has a fixed transfer later. Review that decision against breakfast, sunrise, route conditions and the instructions for confirmed services. Ask the hotel whether an earlier breakfast is possible; do not assume it will be.

If heat is the concern, leaving directly after breakfast is often early enough on a normal stage. Carry water, use sun protection and adjust the pace rather than walking unfamiliar paths in darkness. Reflective clothing and a head-torch improve visibility but do not reveal every loose stone, arrow or road crossing.

A sensible hotel-to-hotel rhythm

Prepare the daypack and review the stage the previous evening. Check the breakfast time, sunrise, distance, weather and first reliable stop. For most travelers with a booked room, breakfast followed by an 8 to 8:30 am departure gives ample time for a standard stage.

There is no prize for reaching the next hotel before check-in opens. The advantage of an organized self-guided Camino is knowing where you will sleep and being able to walk without competing for that bed.
